This is one of the books in this book series where the author decided to just jump out of the main plot almost entirely and write a book about a different set of persons in The Empire’s Corps universe. There are no marines in this book, well except for a retired one, and except for a short tie in at the end it has nothing whatsoever to do with the struggles of the Commonwealth and Avalon. I am still sitting on the fence as to whether I like this somewhat disrupted storyline or not. Normally I do not like when an author goes off like that but these books are really good so I feel I cannot complain too much.Anyway, in this book we follow Sameena after, as the book blurb states, some of the religious leaders of her planet got a grudge against her family. As a matter of fact the entire planet is governed by the worst kind of fanatical Islamists who try to keep their population in total ignorance. It is of course not made better by the fact that they consider females to be not much more than slaves that should do as they are told and nothing more. Thus Sameena is in for quite a bit of surprises and difficulties when she gradually discovers how much of her life that have been a lie and has to adapt to a free society. I am not sure what I expected after reading the book blurb but I think I expected something else. This would not be the first time this author have surprised me a bit though. So far it has never been in a bad way.
A lot of the book deals with Sameena growing into this trader society that rather quickly more or less adopts her. This fairly non-military story with its trading, trader contracts, buying and selling of ships and merchandize is normally little bit out of my comfort zone for science fiction but I have to say that I found it to be enjoyable reading nevertheless. As usual Mr. Nuttal makes the characters interesting and makes you care about them or at least care about what is going to happen next. His writing is a reasonable mix between providing details and advancing the story and although I am more of a military sci-fi person I still liked these parts of the book.
Luckily, from my point of view at least, it is not all about building a trading empire. Sameena have to crack a few eggs while doing so and the necessity for backing herself up with some military hardware soon becomes evident. During the later parts of the book the action escalates quite rapidly and eventually the previously mentioned Islamist fanatics (lunatics) creeps back into the story. Lets just say that the solution to that little problem is not obtained via diplomatic channels.
On the whole a very good book. I could pick a few books by Mr. Nuttall that I liked even more but this one is still a very enjoyable book and, as usual, I am looking forward to when I start to read the next book by this author.

I have read and enjoyed Mr. Nuttall's other 4 books in his "The Empire's Corps" series, and admire his creation of an interesting and believable universe, and managed to even enjoy his lessons in economics. But this episode, about a young woman who escapes an appallingly restrictive society and plays a major role in saving a sector of the Empire from falling into barbarism, is simply not as good as the others. It is well written, and full of interesting insights about the need for something as simple as spare parts to keep a technology-dependent society alive, as well as good portraits of the space-based trader "clans," and the space station Madagascar which serves as an intermediary for trade throughout the sector. But the characters, including the heroine, are flat and uninteresting, and the entire book is lifeless. Yes, there is a plot, and yes action happens. But it doesn't engage. And besides that, Nuttall seems to have fallen into the "character 101" cliche, so that, at least 50 times the heroine "scowls." One more scowl and I would have been howling. In fairness, Nuttall isn't the only author to do this; one well-known military SF author uses "snort" to wretched excess. Anyway, this book doesn't put me off the series, and I hope he will revisit his universe, but in a more engaging manner, as in the first 4 books. And he seems to have set up a sequel where the Avalon of 3 of the books will ally with the "Trade Federation" of this one, which is something I would like to see.
This author has created an interesting universe in his "Empire" series, has some interesting stories to tell in it, and has created some characters to care about. However, he also has some extremely annoying writing quirks that, at times, overwhelm all else. For instance, throughout the series, he has grossly overused the word "inwardly," as in "She scowled inwardly." In this book, "scowled" appears so often the main character should be called "Scowlin' Sameena, Scourge of Space" instead of the "Trader Queen," a title he uses twice--once at the beginning of the book, once at the end. Toward the end of the book, "nipped in the bud" is used five or six times in twenty pages, or so it seems. And while I'm at it, the Prof is more than a little preachy, smug, and condescending throughout the series. Oh, and despite growing up on a planet thousands of light years from Earth and that limits the education of women, Scowlin' Sameena is familiar with the climatology of Mars.
Those are nits. The real problem with this book is that in the end, Scowlin' Sameena becomes what she claims to hate--a person who enforces her opinion on others with violence. Oh, sure, she's righteous and justified--in her mind and in ours, the author hopes, but it's no different from the Bad Guys' opinion of their thinking. She claims to want freedom, progress, diversity, and the right of everyone to express their ideas as she unfailingly mocks and ruthlessly eliminates "root and branch" (the author just loves cliches) those she disagrees with.
I'll probably continue reading the series; this book is probably the worst of the bunch so far, but they'll probably get better. You'll probably enjoy them if the mentioned problems don't bother you, but once you spot them, you'll probably scowl inwardly but keep reading anyway. If the wording of this paragraph didn't bother you, then you'll probably enjoy the book.
